CPH, Denmark 2008
On a cold and windy night in Jonas' kitchen two questions popped up...
Why is so much talent wasted?
Why do most people with talent never get to use their potential? In the music industry it's because a handful of people decide who's in and who's out. Most people can't battle that system because it requires the right network to get commercial success - and most just don't have that network.
What can we do to change that?
We could make a tool where you could establish the network required to execute any idea. Since we're play music ourselves we decided to focus on the music industry. Users should be able to meet musicians, producers, photographers, bookers and managers. Users should be able to exchange files, share calendars, and communicate via chat and messages in both public and private spaces. It had to be both social community + project management.
Forget it guys, you gotta focus!
Pretty ambitious and most people told us to forget it and focus on 1 thing (keep it simple and laugh all the way to the bank and all that). But the thing was that we saw the whole tool as 1 thing: 1 tool that could cover the need of any artist. 1 tool to rule them all. We wanted social networking, communication, and file sharing and project management together in one online tool.
The first rocket crash landed
We launched makemusic.net in May 2009. It didn't work. It wasn't built right.
More experience crew.
We'll re-launch May 2010 with more experience and greater determination.
